Listen to ‘We’re Here For A Good Time (Not A Long Time)’ here:

Hello! We’re Ray, Andrew and Martin, otherwise known as Vulnerable. We’ve been making music together since we first met at school in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England (and we’ve been entering HCSC since way back then, too).

As he’s the man behind the lyrics, Andrew is going to tell you all about our entry for HCSC 2021. Take it away…

“We’re Here For A Good Time (Not A Long Time) is a phrase a friend said to me when we were discussing our fears for the future during the latest set of redundancies at the company we worked for. (Spoiler: we both got canned.)

The lyrics for this one were originally very different, as I had wanted to explore a dark subject matter with a nihilistic but tongue-in-cheek title. While the song was sitting in our work queue, I had second thoughts, so one day I sat down and completely reversed it into something with a more optimistic outlook like it is now. The message of the song is to question why you’re on this planet and whether you could be doing more – ultimately, to live without regret.

As a humanist I feel this is one of the strongest lyrics I have written since ‘Future Tense’ (HCSC 2017). While the song already appeared on our album ‘World on Fire’, we’ve tweaked this mix to clean it up a bit, and actually we much prefer this special Home Composed exclusive version! Personally I find this one still resonates very hard with me as we live through this pandemic, and the sheer joy of the final lyrics exploding into that crazy solo is just wonderful and helps me come to terms with the future world we’re all going to inhabit.”

A couple of our friends also dropped in to help out with the recording: You’ll be hearing Laurence Wilson on drums, and the guitar solo Andrew mentioned is the work of Callum Arnott. We hope you enjoy it!

We’re Here For A Good Time (Not A Long Time)

Every day I wake

In a shell of mistakes

And I wonder how much time

Is left on the clock

Have I done all I want?

Is this the place that I’ll haunt?

Am I taking up room?

Can I ignore all of their taunts?

We’re here for a good time, not a long time

We’re here to bring joy, not to destroy

Chase off Death for the day

No work and all play

We’re here for a good time, not a long time

Every day I wake

In a shell of mistakes

And I wonder if we’ll learn

To live with all this concern

Then I look at the news

And see that we’re still a mess

Well it’s just bringing me down

With all this constant distress

We’re here for a good time, not a long time

We’re here to bring joy, not to destroy

Chase off Death for the day

No work and all play

Here for a good time, not a long time

We’re here to bring joy, not to destroy

Chase off Death for the day

Chase off Death for the day

Chase off Death for the day

Holding hands with who I love the most

Holding hands with a future ghost

Begin again today

(When I lie down)

We’ve something now to say

(It’ll be forever)

Let’s take a last breath

(When I lie down)

Confirm to the world

We won’t choose to opt out
