Song 15 / #GBR4 – Utd Kingdom

Song title: Winter Sunset

Music by: Jim Brook

Lyrics by: Jim Brook

Artist: Cellphone

Listen to ‘Winter Sunset’ here:

Hi. I’m Jim Brook from London and I first started participating in the HCSC in 2014, originally in partnership with our co-competitor, Andy Mendelson, but now flying solo.  All of my song ideas are first recorded onto my mobile – hence the name Cellphone. Recently I have been trying out GarageBand and this year’s entry includes my first experimentation with strings and percussion, whilst Andy Brook contributed backing vocals and piano.

“Winter Sunset” is a melancholy love song. Imagine a guy out walking on a beautiful winter’s evening, his hands thrust deep into his pockets against the cold and his breath freezing in front of his face as he ponders how unfair love can be. To quote the great Smokey Robinson: “A taste of honey is worse than none at all”… and this is the emotion that my song tries to convey.

Wishing the best of luck to all the participants in HCSC 2021.

Winter Sunset

When will you let me in?

When will I ever begin

To feel at home in your heart?

Or must I always remain

Here outside in my pain

The pain that tears me apart?

And so I walk to the winter sunset,

The cold winter sunset.

It’s cold, so cold,

But achingly beautiful.

And all my questions hanging like breath in the air.

How much more can I bear?

How much more can I bleed?

Kicking my hurt through the leaves,

Knowing your kisses were thieves,

Knowing your kisses I need.

And so I walk to the winter sunset,

The cold winter sunset.

It’s cold, so cold,

But achingly beautiful.

I know that love ain’t easy,

And I know that love goes wrong,

But I pray that one day you will sing my song.

So when will you let me in?

When will I ever begin

To feel at home in your heart?

For I am lost in the winter sunset,

The cold winter sunset.

It’s cold, so cold,

But achingly beautiful.
